Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's death, the Ford family was looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to word associations. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford then applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time she was already making her TV debut on an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
